# Understand quiet speech in lectures and videos

The goal is intelligible speech. A high slider value does not show whether words become clearer or only background noise increases.

## Choose a short reference passage

Choose a normal speech passage and a second one with louder audio. Test both in the website player without processing first. Keep device volume constant and do not change playback speed at the same time.

Free can raise the voice but does not automatically separate it from music or noise. With an existing Plus entitlement you can compare Voice with Flat; sales remain disabled.

## Use only necessary gain

1. Start near 100 percent in the correct tab.
2. Increase in small steps and replay the same words.
3. Also check the louder passage and noisy pauses.
4. Use captions or a better source if gain does not improve clarity.

## Compare actual intelligibility

Note two or three words that were previously unclear. Improvement means they become easier to understand at a comfortable level. Fuller sound without clearer words does not meet your goal.

## Compare the actual speaker and output device

A setting for one speaker does not automatically suit another. After switching, recheck a normal sentence and a louder passage. Another output device can also change the impression. Keep the device constant while diagnosing, then record the change if comparing headphones with speakers. Device settings and tab gain are different layers; do not change both simultaneously if you want a traceable comparison.

If you repeatedly adjust volume, note the lowest useful value per source as a reference. It is not a guaranteed improvement or automatic profile assignment for every website. For an unclear technical term, text or captions often help more than extra gain. Decide from words actually understood and discard settings that mainly make noise or sibilance unpleasant.

## A worked example

A quiet lecturer speaks over ventilation noise. Gain raises both. Compare a sentence and a pause: if ventilation mainly becomes louder, more gain provides little benefit. Try a smaller setting and available captions. A Plus Voice profile is an EQ comparison, not automatic voice isolation.

Add your observations. This template processes no files and sends no report.

### Check the result

### If something is wrong

**Observation and next step**

| Observation | Next step |
| --- | --- |
| Only noise gets louder | Reduce gain and use a better source or captions. |
| Speech remains muffled at high gain | Check the original; compare existing Plus EQ separately if available. |
| Interstitial clips too loud | Test the louder passage beforehand and reduce the level. |

## Common questions

**Does Voice isolate a voice?**

No. Voice is a Plus EQ profile; it does not separate speech into a separate audio layer.

**Can Free create captions?**

Audio gain does not create captions. Use the player’s existing caption function.

Browser activation and a Plus entitlement are separate requirements. Protected content and specialised players can have their own limitations.
