# Evaluate settings with a fair listening comparison

A comparison is more informative when you hear only one change. Keep source, passage and device output as constant as possible.

## Name the listening goal first

“Better” may mean clearer words, less harsh treble or a more balanced sound. Write one concrete criterion. Do not compare entirely different recordings; their quality and levels may differ.

For volume presets, assess necessary gain. For Plus EQ profiles, keep perceived loudness similar so louder sound does not automatically seem better.

## A, B and return to A

1. Play a short passage using setting A.
2. Change exactly one parameter or profile to B.
3. Replay the same passage.
4. Return to A and check whether the apparent improvement repeats.

## Keep only an explainable improvement

Note benefits and side effects. A setting may clarify speech while making sibilance unpleasant. The right decision depends on your content and output device, not the largest possible slider value.

## Evaluate the result and effort together

A listening comparison does not need many adjustments. Choose one passage, baseline and alternative. Note the first impression without further changes, then return to A. If a difference appears only after numerous adjustments, the comparison is difficult to trace. Restart with a simple goal. A small clearly useful change serves your workflow better than a complex mix whose effect you cannot explain.

For music, compare loud and quiet sections; for speech, a normal sentence and difficult words. Check both before retaining the setting. This is a personal source-specific decision, not a universal ranking of profiles. Repeat after source or device changes. Explicitly note no improvement so you do not repeat the same inconclusive trial next session.

## A worked example

You compare Flat and Detail in the Plus mixer. Detail initially seems livelier. Replay the same passage at similar volume and deliberately listen for sibilance. Return to Flat. If the difference is no longer helpful on the third pass, Flat remains a traceable baseline.

Add your observations. This template processes no files and sends no report.

### Check the result

### If something is wrong

**Observation and next step**

| Observation | Next step |
| --- | --- |
| Everything changed at once | Return to baseline and test one parameter. |
| B is only louder | Match perceived loudness before judging tone. |
| No repeatable benefit | Keep baseline and choose another clear goal. |

## Common questions

**Do I need a measurement device?**

A traceable listening log is sufficient for this comparison. Gain is not a measurement of loudness at your ear.

**Can one setting suit every source?**

Sources differ. Recheck the setting after changing source.

Browser activation and a Plus entitlement are separate requirements. Protected content and specialised players can have their own limitations.
